Unfortunately, you can't insure your girlfriend's uninsured truck in New York. The law states that the person that's named on the insurance policy has to be the same one that is on the car registration. If this is not the case then the registration can be suspended which would make it illegal to drive the car. Basically, what this means is that if you do not own the vehicle, then you can't insure the car. While this may not be convenient for either you or your girlfriend, if you still want to drive the car then you do have a couple of options in order to obtain insurance.
If your girlfriend doesn't drive the car and has no desire to do so in the future, you can ask her to sell it to you or give it to you as a gift. After the car is transferred over to you and in your name you can obtain insurance for it and begin to drive it. Your girlfriend can also insure the car and put you on the policy as well. Even though she will be on the policy, she doesn't need to drive it if she doesn't want to. This option may not be as expensive as you might think. No matter what you decide to do, don't drive the car if it doesn't have car insurance. If you are in an accident, it can have dire consequences for both you and the owner of the car. If you have additional questions about insuring a car in the state of New York, you can always consult a licensed insurance agent or contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in the state of New York. They can provide you with further information and perhaps provide you guidance as to the best solution for insuring your girlfriend's car.
