After my mother’s death, I found 2 Whole Life Insurance Policies on me in her Safety Deposit Box. One was originally issued by Atlantic Life Insurance Company, Richmond Virgina in 1954, and then assumed by Southwestern Life Insurance Company, Dallas Texas, circa 1971. The other was issued by Southland Life Insurance Company, Dallas Texas, in 1954. I’m trying to determine whether these whole life policies are still valid and if they have any cash value.”

Southwestern Life Insurance Company, originally headquartered in Dallas, Texas, was initially acquired by Swiss Re Life & Health America Inc., which maintains headquarters in Armonk, New York. On December 28, 2006, Swiss Re merged Southwestern and another subsidiary known as Valley Forge Life Insurance Company. In September 2007, Valley Force Life Insurance Company was merged with Reassure America Life Insurance Company with both companies, still subsidiaries of Swiss Re, known as Reassure America Life Insurance Company. As outlined by the Security and Exchange Commission on October 1, 2007, the merger had no impact on Southwestern Life Insurance Company policies.
By May 2012, Swiss Re agreed to sell Reassure America Life Insurance Company or REALIC to Jackson National Life Insurance Company under the name US Admin Re for six billion dollars. You have two options at this point to learn more about these policies. According to the Texas Department of Insurance, Southwestern is still listed under Swiss Re. The best way to reach a Swiss Re representative to ask for assistance is by calling (914) 828-8914. The company also has a toll free number of (877) 794-7773. The company's website also lists (914) 828 8000 as an Armonk number. Of course, you should also reach out to Jackson via one of the methods outlined on that company's Contact Us page.
As for Southland Life Insurance Company: Security Life of Denver Insurance Company acquired Southland in October 2004. It is a division of Voya Financial, Inc., which was originally known as ING US. In November 2015, ING U.S. started a rebranding strategy. At that time, it kept the Security Life of Denver Ins Co name and a Denver administrative office. As a result, start by calling that office at (770) 980-5100. The Texas Department of Insurance also lists a toll free general contact number of (800) 525-9852.
