Before Driving for Uber, What are the Requirements?

The Uber car requirements for drivers are fairly straightforward. Your car cannot be more than 15 years old, it must be able to fit at least four passengers, and you will need to meet your state’s minimum car insurance requirements in order to drive for Uber. Driving for Uber Eats allows drivers to use an older car or one that has more cosmetic damage. In order to drive for Uber Black, you will need to have a luxury car and an Uber driver rating of at least 4.85.

The Rundown

  • Uber and similar companies have standard requirements for a driver’s age, driving history, and the car they drive
  • To be an Uber driver, you must have a car that is no more than 15 years old, and you have to carry the proper insurance
  • Uber requires all drivers to be at least 18 years old and have a minimum of one year of driving experience

If you are thinking about making a little extra money by driving for a company such as Uber, you may have questions about what you need to do to get started. Uber has certain car requirements along with requirements for your drivers’ records and their vehicles. For example, you must own the title to your car.

As you consider driving for Uber, you will want to make sure you carry ample car insurance. Before you buy car insurance that will work for you as an Uber driver, you should look for free insurance quotes online. As you compare rates online, you’ll learn which companies offer you the best coverage at a price you can afford.

What are Uber’s car requirements?

Uber has strict requirements when it comes to the vehicles their drivers are allowed to utilize when providing rides through Uber. These requirements are:

  • The car must have four doors and be able to transport a minimum of four passengers
  • The vehicle must not be more than 15 years old
  • The vehicle must, at minimum, carry with it all the state’s necessary liability coverage to be driven legally
  • The vehicle cannot be salvaged or rebuilt
  • Rental vehicles are not allowed unless rented from an approved Uber rental company
  • Vehicles cannot have cosmetic damage, missing pieces, commercial branding, or taxi-like paint jobs

While these requirements may prove difficult for some people, you could still use your vehicle to deliver food with Uber Eats. The Uber Eats driver requirements aren’t as stringent as long as you have the required and up-to-date liability coverage on your vehicle.

How old do you have to be to drive for Uber?

To be an Uber driver or an Uber Eats food delivery driver, you must be at least 18 years old with a minimum of one year of driving experience. Your vehicle must also meet the minimum requirements stated above.

How do I become an Uber driver?

In addition to being at least 18 years old with one year of driving experience, you also have to pass a background check. If you meet these requirements, your next step in the application process is to provide proof of the following documents:

  • A valid driver’s license in your state
  • Proof of residency in your state
  • Proof of insurance for your car or the car you’re planning to use
  • A clear recent photo of yourself

Once you get the required documents together, you simply submit the documents — along with the necessary information for the background check, and wait to learn whether you and your car are accepted. If you meet all the requirements and pass the background check, you will become an Uber driver in your city. From there, the company will show you how to use the Uber app to indicate that you’re offering rides, and you can tailor your own availability.

What is Uber Black?

Uber Black is an option Uber offers for its riders who want to ride in style in a luxury vehicle. In addition to driving a luxury vehicle, Uber drivers must have a rating of 4.85 (out of five) or higher.

Most people use Uber Black for official business meetings in new cities or romantic nights out when they want to make sure their transportation is as nice and sleek as possible. If you’re interested in driving for the Uber Black program, you’ll need to meet additional requirements based on the luxury car you can provide as well as your overall Uber driver rating.

  • Drivers for Uber Black must have a commercial license (CDL) and registration
  • Vehicles must be luxury vehicles such as a Cadillac XTS, Lexus GS or LX, Lincoln Navigator, Mercedes-Benz E or GL class, and similar styles.
  • Uber Black vehicles must generally be less than six years old.
  • Greater up-front investment in time and money comparative to becoming a driver for the basic Uber service, but Uber Black drivers also earn more per ride.
