It is rarely mentioned anymore, but Geico is actually an acronym for Government Employees Insurance Company. That was the original name of the company when it started out offering car insurance to those who worked for the government. Today, Geico is one of the largest car insurers in the country, and the animated mascot has become recognized around the world. What has not changed is the type of insurance Geico offers, even though you can now pick up coverage for things other than vehicles at a Geico website.
Geico still sells car insurance, but the company has teamed up with several affiliate insurers to offer Geico customers a range of insurance types, including homeowners and renters insurance. It is not that Geico sells these insurance types; they simply see the convenience of doing all of your insurance shopping at one location. Just remember that when you get the quote from Geico, the company selling you the insurance is not going to be the same.
In addition to home and auto insurance, Geico customers also have access to both term and permanent life insurance, health insurance, and insurance policies for businesses and specialty needs. Geico does not offer things such as flood insurance because of the high financial risk, but they can provide you with a link to an umbrella liability policy that will protect your investments and property.
Purchasing renters insurance through Geico may not provide you with the multiple policy discount offered by other companies. The reason for this is that when you buy insurance from an affiliate, it is not considered to be a policy you purchased through Geico. On the other hand, you should go with a company that offers you the broadest scope of discounts, and the best way to do that is to do your own shopping at an independent insurance brokerage or comparison site such as this one. You can still get renters insurance quote from Geico, and having more quotes to compare to can only help you find the best choice among many.
