Oscar, started in 2013, is a ventured backed health insurance carrier that aims to use technology to make insurance simple and easy to use. The company is run by Silicon Valley veterans looking to disrupt the current health insurance industry. Currently, Oscar Health Plans are available to people buying Obamacare insurance plans through the New York and New Jersey health insurance marketplaces.
Easy to work with, great app
Picking a health insurance plan is stressful to say the least, but I’m glad I chose Oscar. They’ve been really easy to to work with over the past year. The app allows me to both chat with doctors or customer support so I don’t need to wait at a doctors office to get a first opinion or wait on a call to get an answer to a simple insurance-related question. My claims are paid really quick too.

Cutting Benefits - STAY AWAY!
Oscar claims to be the solutions to healthcare and it turns out they made the problem worse. In May 2019 they fired the good doctors from their plan in San Antonio and only do business with the less capable/experienced doctors in the Baptist network that they feel they can control. My Bronze plan pays for nothing! $640+ and they won’t even pay for part of the blood panel required for my annual physical. If when I signed up I knew I would lose all the doctors I do business with on May 1, I certainly would have not renewed them for the 3rd year. YOU ARE WARNED! Stay away – they are a young insurance company already desperately cutting benefits.

Huge, useless, expensive nightmare.
Unless you have a ton of time to devote to finding a doctor, waiting in a waiting room and in general struggling to get your needs met, this is not the insurance for you. We signed up for Oscar starting 1/1/19 and on 1/3, we started looking for doctors. The first several we called said they didn’t take Oscar, despite being on Oscar’s site. The next several were not primary care doctors despite being listed as such on Oscar’s site. We finally got an appointment with someone a week out to find their office standing room only and being told wait time was 2 hours after the appointment time. After giving up on that, we went back and tried calling more doctors to find the same thing happening or the doctors that did support Oscar and were primary care doctors were booking appointments months out. During this whole thing we tried working with Oscar’s Concierge Team” and they’re useless. They have the exact same list we do on the website, don’t believe you when you tell them it’s wrong, won’t call on your behalf (despite their website saying they will)… It’s just a huge, useless, expensive nightmare.

Do not get Oscar
Almost every procedure had to be pre-authorized; and almost every pre-authorization was denied requiring yet another request. Denials are just because we don’t cover that”.
Paperwork is astounding for providers.
Patients cannot receive the care they need.
Don’t put your health at risk.

WORST HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANY
worst sham insurance company!!! avoid them like the plague!!! i have been with them for too many years, and i finally woke up. they are full of crap. why in the world can’t your insurance company ever be able to tell you what your out of pocket or negotoated fee with be. they always give the same answer, that they can’t pull it up…its an estimate and no one ever had that procedure, so we can’t tell you. have the surgery and then we’ll let you know. wtf??? as soon as i can change companies in janiary, adios! this company actually makes you sick and need health insurance!”

Satsisfied with Oscar
We picked Oscar since the Cleveland Clinic was in their Network. It’s the best hospital in the tri-state area. We have not used the hospital and hopefully won’t. But it’s nice to have them available if needed.

Wish I could leave negative stars
It is aweful. Don’t use this insurance, they will cover nothing and fight you on everything. They will tell you your covered if you ask then refuse to pay once you submit a claim. I went for a flu shot and the doctor that Oscar recommend and said was in network had never heard of Oscar, would not take my insurance and told me I had been scammed. Instead of reimbursement, Oscar told me I had to go back to the doc and tell them Oscar was a real insurance. What kind of rip off are they running?

Horrible doctors and horrible billing
Horrible doctors in San Antonio. I spent so much time having to follow up unresolved claims between doctors and Oscar (Over 10 hours in,phone calls over 6 months) and things never moved forward or got explained. Coverage says things are covered but then the doctors bill you and Oscar does nothing about it.

3 free primary care visits, except, they aren't!
Oscar claims you get up to 3 free visits with a primary care doctor per year. except once you make the first visit, you will get the pleasant surprise of a nice sized bill from your primary doctor’s office. so now you’re paying $220/month for nothing, thanks Oscar. Can’t wait until Obama care gets overturned by our new President. This is such a scam. I’m paying well over $2k year for nothing.

No major problems after 4 months
I haven’t had any problems so far. I chose this because our doctors were on the list. There aren’t any urgent cares or labs close to us, so I’m not too happy about that. The phone reps mostly know their stuff, although occasionally I have to school them. They’ve been pleasant though.

Still billing me for cancelled covereage
I cancelled my coverage on Feb 28th, and the Oscar rep confirmed the cancellation. Now I’m finding out that I’m still being billed, and they have no record of the cancellation. I’m still trying to get it cancelled, but receive no help each time I call.

Garbage.
Charges me $200 to provide nothing at all unless I have a catastrophic accident, then sends me 3 meme band aids to add insult to injury. Doesn’t accept credit cards in 2018.

Company is a SCAM
Beyond the ridiculously high deductibles, they don’t do price checking,” which means you have no way to know what the cost of a procedure will be with an in network doctor. The best they could tell me is that Oscar discount is somewhere between 10 – 60% of the full cost. There’s no way to know where in that range the cost will fall until the claim is processed. This is outrageous.

Awful in every respect
I have a bronze plan ($200 per month), which doesn’t cover anything until I hit my $7000 deductible.
On average, responses from customer service takes a week to respond. I’m extremely worried I won’t be able to switch out of this.

BEYOND INEXCUSABLE
BEWARE THIS COMPANY!!! I NEED CANCER SURGERY AND THIS COMPANY WON’T GET ME TO A SURGEON. I was diagnosed with melanoma (skin cancer) by an Oscar network dermatologist and told to get scheduled right away for a resection of melanoma and sentinel lymph node biopsy with a surgical oncologist. I live in Austin and there are plenty of qualified surgeons to do this, but not one of them is in Oscar’s network, which tells you how inadequate their network is. First Oscar referred me to doctors who only do breast cancer. Then they again referred me to two more inappropriate doctors who do only endocrinology and breast cancer–obvious from their bios if Oscar had bothered to read them or call. Their latest third option now is to send me to a hick town in Taylor, TX 75 miles away, with a doctor who specializes in pancreatic and liver cancers but does other stuff (because it’s a small town), and who doesn’t have surgical availability for weeks, rather than find me an appropriate doctor who deals with melanoma every day and can do the surgery timely. I even offered to go to Dallas or Houston or another metropolis if I had to in order to have an appropriately qualified doctor and have my surgery timely. But Oscar can’t seem to manage that either, or to authorize an out of network surgeon here in Austin, even though I would be paying some or all out of pocket from my high deductible. They give you a case manager” who can’t authorize anything, and then when you ask to speak with someone who can, they tell you the authorization people don’t speak to customers. And then random people who know nothing about your case text you inappropriate physician referrals instead of your case manager managing anything. Zero urgency, zero competency, zero caring that I am not getting the surgery my physician told me to get promptly. This is how you will be treated when you have CANCER people. Stay away from this company at all costs!!!”

Health care review employee
Have a $14,300 family deductible, that is upon paying monthly fee of $700.00 for this insurance. How is a family suppose to pay out $14,300 to go to Doctor before they pay. How is this affordable

I'm very disappointed
Oscar has huge, massive deductibles and tons of red tape. They are very expensive and give almost nothing in return. They are inefficient and impossible to deal with and cover virtually nothing. Worst of all, they promise member benefits like bonuses for health clubs or exercise, but do EVERYTHING in their power to find excuses, loopholes, exceptions and sometimes, in my experience, outright lies, so they can avoid ever giving those benefits. It would be much better if they simply didn’t make such offers. I started out liking Oscar, but they have worked hard to earn my utter contempt.

They do not cover 1 free visit to dr if sick/year
Oscar is a complete rip off. they claim you get 1 free visit a year but really don’t specify (but I am sure in small print somewhere) that that 1 free visit is only for a physical and/or lab work. me & my husband paid $700/month – neither went to the dr ever – and the 1 time my husband goes for a sinus infection, Oscar doesn’t cover it and we get billed.
I call them and they say they don’t cover 1 free visit a year if you are sick. are you kidding me!?! so people, just an fyi – if you get a cold or something, you don’t get any coverage. I would drop the insurance if you are a well person since you shouldn’t be taxed for not carrying it now…

No ONE, no Dr., no Lab, no X-ray
None of these people, no doctors, no labs, no x-ray techs, NO ONE would except this insurance. NOT EVEN IN NETWORK! NOT for the last two and half months. But I had to pay my OSCAR bill. Explain that Oscar!

Highly disorganized, No Responsibility
1. The person doing the intake stated we had a discount we could get. She never said it was medicare. She set us up on medicare even though our company was paying for the insurance.
2. She never reversed our medicare enrollment
3. She got the spelling of our names wrong despite repeating the spelling twice
4. She told us they would send an invoice.
5. Never got an invoice.
6. Called and was informed of the premium and the address where to send it (in NYC).
7. I was also told to send it by the end of the month
8. Sent it. I called and they said all of our introduction packets would be sent once the payment was processed.
9. Never happened. Sent second payment. It cleared.
10. Called to ask about our packets, we were told that we were cancelled due to non-payment. I repeated everything that happened and the person who was helping me said she would get to the bottom of it. In our conversations, we discovered a few thins:
a. NYC address was incorrect. That was the corporate office they gave me. I should’ve been sending to CA address.
b. NYC address does process payments but slower than CA
c. The first check was never found though I had proof of it being sent.
11. By this time, two months checks had cleared, but the first check was not found. I said, Well then let me send you a check to replace the lost one. I was told that unless we can show the first check clearing our account, they will not reinstate the account. “So you admit there was an error made on Oscar Health’s part and you have left me unprotected for two and half months now and your answer is we are not reinstating you” – SHE SAID YES.
11. I asked that they send me back my premiums. The first arrived in 3 weeks. The second in 6 weeks. So returning my money can take as along as they want!!!
This was a gross display of the degeneration of health care in this country and I am disgusted! PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GO ELSEWHERE FOR YOUR HEALTH CARE.

I am researching other possibilities only because New York Presbyterian facilities will not be included in network starting 2016
