Founded in 1991, Direct General Insurance specializes in providing coverage for individuals who don’t qualify for standard auto insurance. Since its inception, this carrier has quickly spread out across much of the Southeastern United States and currently has a headquarters in Nashville, TN.
Unlike other insurers who offer coverage for vehicles, dwellings, and life, Direct General keeps their focus on drivers. At the present time, they don’t offer any policies for dwelling coverage, such as renters or homeowner’s insurance. Instead, emphasis is geared towards their auto, motorcycle, term life, and roadside assistance products.
Direct General provides a much needed service in the insurance industry: helping those who can’t get coverage elsewhere. One of their main goals is to assist individuals who have been classified as "high-risk" or require an SR-22 filing on their insurance. Since major name brand insurers often turn this classification of driver away, Direct helps people get the insurance they need so they can get back on the road without a hassle.
This carrier makes payments easy by offering multiple options to their clientele. Not only are credit, debit cards, and cash accepted, Direct also accepts e-check and pay-by-text, in addition to offering special payment kiosks in the state of Tennessee. Their website makes a point to mention that current and future policyholders are not required to have a credit card or checking account to get coverage.
In addition to their non-standard auto and term life products, Direct offers a few other specialty items that may not be easily found elsewhere. Seeking to meet all of the insurance needs for their policyholders, Direct General also sells vehicle protection plans and Mexico Auto Insurance. While some other carriers may exclude coverage for drivers who leave the country, Direct is making this coverage available by brokering their Mexico Tourist Insurance through MXGA, Inc. Typical policies include liability, bond and bail assistance, medical expenses, comprehensive, collision, theft protection, and roadside service. Interested parties may also be able to cover towed items, such as an RV, trailer, boat or Jet Ski.
Further expanding the products they have available for their customers, Direct is now offering Commercial Auto Insurance as well. Not just for individuals, their policies may provide coverage for fleets with up to 20 vehicles. Their commercial policies are currently available in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
For drivers in the Southeast needing insurance coverage, it’s easy to find a Direct General Insurance agency. Presently, there are over 400 locations in eleven states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
