  • Unicare offers health insurance plans, pharmacy plans, dental insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, behavioral health plans, COBRA, short-term insurance plans, and flex pay accounts
  • There are eleven insurance plan options for individuals who opt for an MHealth Insured Elect plan
  • The MHealth Elect Basic 2000 plan is the most affordable

Unicare insurance is an insurance provider that offers health maintenance organization plans, preferred provider organization plans, and health products that specialize in consumer-driven care options.

Having health insurance is vital to protect you and any family members considered dependent. As a subsidiary of Anthem Inc., Unicare offers three types of health insurance plans: MHealth Insured Elect, MHealth Insured Select, and MHealth Insured Connect.

By delivering a range of wellness and care plans at reasonably affordable rates, Unicare provides a great option for all-inclusive coverage.

What health plans does Unicare offer, and what do they cover?

Choosing a health insurance plan can feel daunting, especially when there are many options for coverage on the market. Thankfully, Unicare breaks down its cover into three simple plans.

Their three main plan types are MHealth Insured Elect, MHealth Insured Select, and MHealth Insured Connect. With MHealth Insured Elect plans, there are eleven different plan options for family health insurance.

This is what is covered:

Plan typeWhat it covers
MHealth Elect & Basic 2000 planHas a $2,000 annual deductible per member; annual out of pocket maximums for members is $3,000 per member and $6,000 per plan
MHealth Elect 1000 & Plus 1000Has a $1000 deductible; offers an 80/20 coverage plan; prescriptions are $10 co-pay for generic and $30 for name brand
MHealth Elect Plus 1500Has a $1500 deductible; offers an 80/20 coverage plan; prescriptions are $10 co-pay for generic and $30 for name brand
MHealth Elect Plus 2500Has a $2500 deductible; offers an 80/20 coverage plan; prescriptions are $10 co-pay for generic and $30 for name brand
MHealth Elect 3500 & Plus 3500Has a $3500 deductible; coverage is 75/25 & generic drug costs are $10 co-pay as well as name brand costing $60 co-pay
MHealth Elect 5000 & Plus 5000Has a $5000 deductible; coverage is 75/25 & generic drug costs are $10 co-pay as well as name brand costing $60 co-pay
Insured Elect HSAOffers mid-range deductibles such as $1,150; after deductible is met (80% in-network and 50% out-of-network), all services are 100% covered

With any MHealth plan — not including Plus plans — there is a $5 million lifetime maximum coverage benefit per person. Office visits will require a $30 co-pay upfront and a $30 co-pay for drugs. Only two visits annually will be covered without paying in full. Once you reach two visits annually, you will be required to pay in full until you reach your deductible.

All other care is covered up to 75% when using in-network doctors and up to 50% when using out-of-network doctors.

Prescription drugs also have $500 maximum coverage per person per year.

Unicare’s Elect Plus plans offer similar benefits with a higher deductible. However, it offers better options when it comes to doctor’s visits. With a Plus plan, you won’t have any limitations on doctors visits for preventative care, and your co-pay is a flat $30 for each visit.

Does Unicare offer any other types of insurance plans?

Unicare offers a variety of plans that are more than just health plans. Unicare offers specialty insurance plans that include pharmacy, dental, life, disability (which covers both long and short term), behavioral, COBRA, short-term insurance, and flex pay accounts.

There are a few different products to choose from, including group term life, accidental death & dismemberment, dependent life, and optional life.

Coverage under group term life includes waivers of premium and living benefits. It also includes coverage for spouses and children. When you have accidental death in your plan, benefits will equal the amount of your group term life insurance. You can buy voluntary coverage with disability insurance and accidental death insurance.

Also, if you move on from your job, your plan sticks with you.

Unicare benefits also include access to the Unicare insurance provider portal where you can log on, manage your plan, and view your bill using your unique Unicare login.

What kind of reviews does Unicare insurance have?

While Unicare offers affordable rates and robust coverage options, there are several negative reviews for Unicare across different websites.

Most reviews are poor to average ratings containing an overwhelming amount of similar situations. These reviews are mostly targeted at the poor claims process, with consumers complaining of denied coverage or policy cancellation. Some also express dissatisfaction with Unicare’s in-network coverage options.

Here are some of the reviews:

Had to go out on a short term disability due to illness that lasted five weeks. I didn’t receive the medical documentation packet until my fourth week on sick leave. Upon sending in all the required medical documentation from both multiple ER visits as well as through my primary care physician, my entire claim was denied for no specified reasoning.

FreeAdvice User

Unicare health insurance is disorganized. customer service is saying anything to not do any work. they also lie. I have been told different answers for a coverage claim. > the handbook is a scam . says specific tests are covered then they don’t pay . they do not even follow their own appeals process.

FreeAdvice User

Policy wording is deeply ambiguous and inadequate. They use this uncertainty to not cover your claims. They do not take any complaint seriously.

InsuranceUSA User

Unicare usually pays 50% to 20% on any claim you submit, despite their promise to pay 80%.

InsuranceUSA User

Interestingly enough, Unicare only has one filed complaint with the Better Business Bureau in the last three years and an A.M. Best rating of A-. They remain unaccredited, however.

Unicare Insurance Review: Key Takeaways

While Unicare offers great options for health and life insurance coverage, it’s tough to say whether or not they are worth purchasing insurance from. With plenty of negative reviews claiming that Unicare refuses to pay out claims and extended wait periods for claims to be filed, you may want to look elsewhere if you need good customer service.

However, Unicare does offer affordable rates for individual and families that include plenty of plan options to fit your specific needs.
