The Rundown

  • Allstate offers a max 30 percent discount for using Drivewise and has an AM Best rating of A+
  • Travelers Insurance only offers a 20 percent discount and has an A.M. Best rating of A++
  • Usage-based car insurance policies help insurers gauge risk more accurately and earn discounts

Staying covered on the road is essential to your safety. But what if car insurance could go a little farther? Using telematics, Allstate Drivewise and Travelers IntelliDrive offer drivers discounts for safe driving or limited time on the road.

Auto insurance rates are based on how much risk a driver poses on the road. These factors can be determined by general demographics as well as the value of your vehicle. But with telematics, affordable usage-based auto insurance quotes are up to the driver.

What Is Travelers Intellidrive?

Travelers IntelliDrive is newer to the usage-based insurance discount game. In 2017, Travelers came out with a different approach to the telematics-calculating rates by not including miles driven — which is marked against drivers in the Allstate Drivewise app.

IntelliDrive is available to each driver on the policy.

You can view your account through your Travelers IntelliDrive login and monitor your habits as well.

How does Intellidrive work?

What does Travelers Intellidrive record? Travelers IntelliDrive measures four habits:

  • Rapid changes in speed
  • Harsh braking
  • Time of day
  • Rate of acceleration

IntelliDrive monitors drivers for 90 days, then it uses that data to measure your driving habits and determine your discount rate. If you tend to have riskier driving habits, you will have higher rates. If you employ safe driving habits, your rates will be lower. Based on the driving performance, your adjusted usage-based insurance rate will be reflected on your policy renewal date.

What Is Drivewise From Allstate?

Allstate Drivewise measures driving skills and behaviors then rewards good drivers with discounted rates and cash-back rewards.

After the Allstate Drivewise installation which can either be a literal plugin installation or a downloadable app drivers automatically get a 10 percent discount. It’s said to help drivers save up to 30 percent on car insurance.

Drivewise can be downloaded by anyone, not just Allstate members.

How does Drivewise work?

Through the app Drivewise allows you to collect rewards or drive performance cash rewards after you’ve collected points for safe driving.

Drivewise monitors:

  • Driving at safe speeds
  • Not slamming on the brakes
  • No late-night driving

The mobile app detects when you’re driving by using your phone’s location service, so your phone needs to be at least 25 percent charged. Drivewise detects motion when you’ve traveled more than 20 miles per hour for a short distance.

Before we learn about usage-based car insurance, lets answer a few more questions:

Can Allstate Drivewise raise your rates? No

Does phone activity affect Drivewise? Yes. Screen time while driving is risky behavior and will lower your score.

Which Is Better, Travelers IntelliDrive vs. Allstate Drivewise?

Is Allstate Drivewise worth it?

Drivers aren’t penalized for their bad driving habits, so the app doesn’t pose any risk to you. Though, drivers shouldn’t expect to reach the maximum discount. The average savings are about 20 percent.

Other Drivewise reviews claim that they feel the app violates their privacy. While it can’t track where you drive, Allstate’s Drivewise terms of use do say that “Data from the device may be deemed discoverable by third parties and used in an accident investigation and⁄or litigation.” You will save money using Drivewise, at least a little bit. Allstate offers a 10 percent discount just for signing up. It could be worth a shot.

How does the Travelers program stack up?

When compared to not only Allstate Drivewise but to other usage-based car insurance companies, Travelers isn’t impressive. Unlike Drivewise, Travelers will penalize drivers for their risky driving behaviors.

Travelers also doesn’t offer as high a discount as Allstate. However, most drivers receive 15 percent with Travelers IntelliDrive, which is comparable to Drivewise.
