I was getting long term disability payments from my insurance company. They put me in contact with an independent company and pushed me to apply for social security disability . when i was finally approved six months later I received a retro check from SSI . now they claim that I owe them $4400.00 or all of the payments they made to me because they stated that It’s illegal to receive SSI income and receive insurance payments. is this true?”

Receiving Social Security Income (SSI) benefits should not impact your ability to receive insurance benefits for a valid claim. However, it's possible that your insurance company is alleging that you "double-dipped" by receiving both SSI benefits and insurance benefits for the same claim. In general, double-dipping is when an individual receives multiple payouts for the same loss or expense. For example, if you receive insurance benefits for medical expenses and then submit those same expenses to your health insurer for additional reimbursement, that would be considered double-dipping. If your insurance company is alleging that you double-dipped by receiving both SSI benefits and insurance benefits for the same claim, it's important to understand the specific provisions of your policy and the requirements for receiving SSI benefits. Depending on the circumstances of your case, it may be possible to dispute the insurer's decision and seek additional compensation for your claim. If you believe that you have been wrongly accused of double-dipping, it may be helpful to consult with an experienced attorney who can review the details of your case and advise you on the best course of action. Additionally, you may want to consider filing a complaint with your state's insurance regulatory agency or seeking assistance from a consumer advocacy group to help protect your rights and ensure that you receive fair treatment from your insurer.
