The Rundown

  • MVP Health Care offers various plans and customization options within those plans to fit most budgets
  • Its online customer service portal named “Gia” can help save time when requesting or managing services
  • The company’s number of plans and options can become confusing when trying to compare prices

MVP Health Care is a regional insurance company offering various health insurance plans for individuals and families living in New York or Vermont.

With over 700,000 members and 17,000 providers, it is considered one of the largest regional insurers. Founded in 1982 in Schenectady, New York, MVP Health Care is a not-for-profit provider that has won several awards for service and clinical quality.

By combining various available plans and a robust online customer portal, MVP has become a strong choice in health insurance for those living in the area it serves.

MVP Health Care offers its plans to consumers on its website or over the phone. Customers can compare plans, submit their information, and pay for plans on its website.

Plans Offered by MVP Health Care

MVP Health Care’s plans consist of four metal-theme categories, ranging from bronze to platinum. There are tiers within these plans to customize the coverage level and rates further.

Bronze Plan

Six tiers are available in the bronze plans designated as levels one through six, with level six having the highest out-of-pocket expenses.

For example, Premier Plus HDHP Bronze 6 has a $6,500 deductible for individuals and $13,050 for families. By comparison, Premier Plus Bronze 1 offers deductibles of $3,800 for individuals and $7,800 for families.

Currently, there are no options in the bronze plans for out-of-network coverage.

Silver Plan

MVP’s silver plans have a similar structure to its bronze plans, consisting of six tiers.

The highest deductible levels in its silver plans are $4,000 for individuals and $8,000 for families. Moving up to the highest level — Premier Plus Silver 1 — deductibles are $1,800 for individuals and $3,600 for families.

Like the bronze plan, there is no coverage for out-of-network care.

Gold Plan

Not surprisingly, the gold plan also breaks down into six tiers. It offers tiers with $0 deductibles, such as Premier Plus Gold 4. Other plans within the gold plan range from a $0 deductible to $3,200.

Platinum Plan

The platinum plans break from the three lower levels in the platinum only has three tiers to choose from instead of the six. All platinum level plans have $0 deductibles.

Visits for primary care range from $5 to $15 within the platinum level. A visit to a specialist ranges from $35 to $45.

Overall, MVP Health Care offers many options so customers can find a plan that best suits their needs and budget. With many tiers to choose from, it can become confusing when shopping and comparing prices. However, we admire having the choice to tailor a health insurance plan, even if at the expense of complexity.

MVP Health Care Customer Service

MVP Health Care has primarily positive reviews regarding its customer service.

U.S. News & World Report rates the company as one of the top Medicare Advantage insurance companies in New York. It also received a commendable accredited status for service and clinical quality from the National Committee for Quality Assurance.

The Better Business Bureau gives them an A+ rating, and a search of the site shows  low negative reviews relative to MVP Health Care’s large size of customers, over 700,000.

Most of the negative reviews were regarding coverage denial or issues with specific providers within the network.

How are claims filed with MVP Health Care?

MVP Health Care is a Health Maintenance Organization provider, so most claims get handled quickly since the insurance is connected and in the same network. There is no out-of-network coverage unless pre-approved, so those claim types are generally not accepted.

You can file a claim or request almost any service with MVP Health Care through its internal customer portal known as Gia. This online portal is available as a smartphone app or on the web.

Customers need to sign up for a Gia account alongside their MVP account. Once logged in the app or online, almost every service is available to customers electronically.

You can request an appointment or ask a question through the Gia online system.

Below is a sampling of services available by using Gia:

  • 24/7 emergency care
  • 24/7 urgent care
  • Mental health and psychiatry
  • Primary care
  • Mobile lab test collection
  • Nutritionists and dieticians

This list is a small portion of the services provided, with many more accessible. The Gia system helps track lab work, deal with prescription refills, and set up virtual care or appointments.

Overall, Gia is a customer-friendly service that can save you time by allowing you to manage your healthcare on the go.

All the services of the Gia app are also available on the website. For those who prefer not to use the app or website, MVP Health Care offers all its customer service features over the phone. Customer care representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Eastern time.

How do the rates for MVP Health Care compare to other providers?

MVP Health Care mainly provides coverage for residents of New York, which has some of the highest insurance premiums in the nation, so MVP’s rates fall in line with New York’s. Compared to other insurance companies, some of its plans lean towards the expensive side, so the price comparisons highly depend on what plans you choose.

The MVP Health Care site does an excellent job of allowing you to set your preferences as you search for plans. You can enter a budget or range per month you would like to spend, and the website offers plans within that range. It’s a nice feature and helps alleviate some of the confusion when shopping for insurance on MVP’s site.

As for rates, the lowest rates we could find were approximately $370 per month for an individual and $1,060 for a family. Premier Plus Bronze 2 offers both rates.

The most expensive plan is the premier platinum plan, costing approximately $664 for individuals and $1,900 for families.

Overall Review

Based on various costs and services provided, MVP Health Care ranks as a strong choice for those looking for health insurance in New York or Vermont.

The different plans offer many options for individuals and families to tailor coverage that fits their budget and healthcare needs,

While MVP’s plans offer many options for individuals and families to tailor coverage, it comes at a price of being somewhat confusing when first viewing them. However, there is a tool to help narrow the plans within your range, helping ease the process.

With over 17,000 providers, there should be no problem finding care near you, one of the benefits of going with a large insurance company.

The addition of the Gia online system to handle most customer interactions is a significant plus for those who prefer to use a smartphone to help manage their lives. However, MVP offers full phone support for those who prefer not to use smartphones but only during regular business hours.

MVP Health Care’s rates are comparable to other insurance plans in the area, and the breadth of coverage options helps you find a plan that fits your budget. However, specific plans can quickly raise your monthly costs, so be careful to select the right level of coverage from each plan.

If you live in New York or Vermont and are looking for a health insurance company, MVP Health Care is a strong choice if one of its many plans fits your needs and budget.
