The Rundown

  • Washington National Insurance sells term and universal life plans for individuals and business owners
  • You can’t buy full health coverage from this company, but it does sell supplemental health plans to cover serious events

Founded by brothers George and Harry Kendall, the Washington National Insurance Company has provided life and health insurance solutions for over a hundred years. Washington National understands that people need protection for every phase of their lives and aims to provide quality products to care for those needs.

From simple term life insurance plans to supplemental health insurance products, Washington National can probably cover any need you have. However, this company has a lot of unsatisfied customers. Finding information online about their policies is difficult.

What types of insurance does Washington National sell?

While details are sparse, Washington National offers term and universal life insurance plans. It also sells a host of supplemental health insurance products. Currently, Washington National sells insurance in every state except New York.

Many types of life insurance can meet your needs, but it all depends on your circumstances. For example, term life is an excellent choice for new parents, new homeowners, or people on a tight budget.

Universal life is more expensive, but you never have to worry about renewing your policy. Permanent plans also accrue cash value, meaning you can borrow against it.

Supplemental health insurance plans aren’t full health coverage. Instead, they cover specific health concerns and help pay your bills.

Washington National Term Life

Washington National is not forthcoming with policy information, but it’s safe to assume it has a similar term life plan to its competitors.

Generally, periods for term life insurance range from 10 years to 30 years. If you die during this period, your beneficiary will receive your death benefit. If you survive the term, you’ll have to renew your policy to continue your coverage.

While information is scarce, Washington National offers two add-ons for its term life policy. The first is its Monthly Income Protection, which are additional payments to your family beyond your death benefit. You can select either a two-, three-, or five-year period during which your family will receive monthly payments.

The second add-on option extends into your retirement. You can purchase an additional lump-sum death benefit between $10,000 and $25,000. The lump-sum kicks in after your Monthly Income Protection expires for no additional fee.

Term life is available for purchase as an individual or group plan. However, you’ll need to speak to one of the Washington National Insurance independent agents for more information.

Washington National Universal Life

While whole life is more common, Washington National only offers universal life for its permanent insurance option.

Universal life insurance is similar to whole life in that it never expires if you keep paying on it, and it accumulates cash value.

Washington National’s universal life insurance offers flexible payments, meaning you can make a smaller payment during months when money is tight. Alternatively, you can make larger payments when you want to build up your cash value a little more.

You also may invest your accumulated value with the S&P 500 index option. Universal also allows you to collect part of your death benefit while you’re still alive to pay for medical bills if you become seriously ill.

Like term life, you can purchase universal as an individual or business owner. For more information, you can call the Washington National Insurance phone number.

Washington National Supplement Health Insurance

While it won’t pay for your doctor visits or annual check-ups, Washington National offers insurance products to protect you from severe health conditions. Washington National has five supplemental health insurance products.

  • Cancer. This plan pays a lump sum if you’re diagnosed with cancer. It also covers wellness screenings, tests, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and transportation costs.
  • Accidents. About 78% of all accidents happen outside the workplace, meaning worker’s compensation does not cover them. This plan helps cover accidents at home involving a disability, burn, fracture, surgery, dismemberment, or accidental death coverage.
  • Critical illness. You’ll get a lump sum after diagnosis of health conditions like cancer, strokes, and heart attacks. This plan covers up to 38 health events, but you’ll need to speak with an agent for more information.
  • Heart disease and stroke. As the biggest killer in America, this plan pays for hospitalization, surgery, heart transplant, and nursing care after you’ve had a stroke or heart issue.
  • Hospital. Even a short stay at the hospital can be expensive. This plan supplements your health insurance to help pay for your hospitalization.

While these won’t cover everything you need for healthcare, you can get peace of mind knowing you’re covered no matter what life throws at you.

If you’re interested in supplemental health insurance, you can access more information by creating an account. Make sure to use the correct login, since the Washington National Insurance provider portal won’t have the information you need.
