What are the top three insurance companies for people with a history of bad accidents?

Even though their rates tend to increase after accidents, USAA, State Farm, and American Family Insurance’s hikes tend to be smaller than those levied by other insurance companies. These are the best insurance companies for poor driving records.

American Family Insurance only serves 19 states; however, if you are a resident in a state that they serve, you can take advantage of their accident forgiveness program. Their accident forgiveness policy allows customers to avoid steep rate increases following their first at-fault accident.

To be eligible for this program, you must maintain an accident-free record for five years and have held an American Family Insurance policy for at least five years. In addition, your record must be free of any major violations or infractions.

To lessen the impact of a poor driving record, State Farm offers discounts and programs in which their clients can enroll. Clients can register for the State Farm Drive Safe & Save and Steer Clear programs.

State Farm also provides driver training and defensive driving courses. There are also vehicle safety discounts and the option to bundle multiple policies.

If you are in the military, you and your direct relatives can become members of the United Services Automobile Association (USAA). USAA offers accident forgiveness and prevents rates from spiking after an at-fault accident.

If you have a USAA car insurance policy, you can enroll in the SafePilot telematics program or the multi-policy bundles.

What should I do after a car accident if I’m insured with State Farm?

First and foremost, State Farm encourages its clients to consider whether or not to file a claim, what they should know beforehand, and what they should know after they file a claim.

You should file a claim if your policy benefits include the following:

  • Payment for repairs and medical bills
  • Rental coverage
  • Liability coverage if you are at fault.

Before you file a claim, make sure you know the following information:

  • Whether or not you should obtain a rental car
  • What you will need to file an auto claim and if your premium will increase
  • If you are going to file online, by app, or by phone.

Ensure that you know the following after you file a claim:

  • Approximately how long the claim will take
  • If you can track and/or manage it at your leisure
  • Whether or not you have a deductible and when and how you will get paid

State Farm shares a five-step process with its clients concerning what to do after they get into an accident.

The most important thing is to remember that safety comes first. If you are in this position, remove your vehicle from traffic and into a safe location.

Next, you should get help. Assess whether or not there are any injures. If there are, even if they are minor, call an ambulance. Also, always call the police, no matter how big or small the accident may have been.

The third step is to collect information. While you are waiting on the police to arrive, you will want to collect the other driver’s information. This will include names and contact information, driver’s license numbers, accident scene information, and even photos.

Now, it is time to file a claim. You can use the State Farm mobile app or call 800-SF-CLAIM. From there, immediately notify your insurance agent of what has just happened.

The claim filing process will go as follows:

  • You file a claim and State Farm reviews it
  • You receive an estimate
  • State Farm pays you via direct deposit or check; otherwise, they pay the mechanic directly

The final step is to contact roadside assistance if your vehicle is unable to be driven.

What should I do after a car accident if I’m insured with USAA?

Roadside assistance is one of the programs offered by USAA. The program covers towing, flat tires, fuel deliveries, battery replacements, jumpstarts, lockouts, and stuck vehicles. These services are offered at low prices.

When submitting an auto claim, there are a number of policy coverages.

The first is liability which covers bodily injury, personal injury, and property damage.

The second is collision which handles vehicle rollovers, damage by falling trees, branches, and rocks, as well as collisions with other vehicles.

The third is comprehensive which covers stolen vehicles, fire damage, riots, explosions, damage due to falling trees, branches, and rocks, road kill, hail, flooding, or weather-related events.

The fourth is uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, which protects you or others and the victims of a hit-and-run.

USAA, likes to help you decide when you should or shouldn’t file a claim. According to USAA, it is optional to file a claim if there is minimal damage, if the cost of repairs is less than the deductible, or if you simply don’t want to fix it.

You should definitely file a claim if passengers were injured, if damage was caused to vehicles or property, or if there was damage to a municipality.

USAA’s Auto Claim FAQ

     1. What if I can’t drive my car after an accident?

Even if you think you are able to drive your car after an accident, there may be unknown damage; therefore, you should always get it inspected. Contact USAA to move the vehicle as quickly as possible if you are not able to operate it.

     2. Can I track my claim online?

You are able to track the process and status of your claim online 24/7.

     3. How long does it take to receive payments?

USAA’s goal is to pay and close claims as quickly as possible. If you are eligible for an electronic funds transfer, the claims process will be expedited.

     4. How long does it take to complete claims?

The time frame it takes to complete a claim is dependent on the number of vehicles, and the amount of injuries that have occurred in the accident.

What should I do after an accident if I’m insured with American Family Insurance?

American Family Insurance always encourages its clients to keep things simple after an accident and to focus on details that are necessary to resolve their claim.

First, you’ll want to report the facts. Don’t necessarily admit fault, but detail what happened in the accident from your perspective.

Next, gather and submit evidence. Pull pictures and contact information you gathered from other drivers and witnesses, and follow the submission instructions from your insurance agent.

Third, share the police report if an officer was at the scene of the accident. You can either obtain the report, or your insurance agent will get it for you. It is, however, essential to ensure that you establish who will retrieve it.

Lastly, file the claim. After speaking with your insurance agent, inquire about how to process a claim to repair damage after the accident, or go online and use the Report a Claim form

American Family Insurance’s Accident Forgiveness Program

Typically, being in an at-fault accident raises average rates by 44%. American Family Insurance believes that, in the event of an accident, their clients should be 100% forgiven to avoid large rate increases due to their first at-fault accident.

You can be in the accident forgiveness program with American Family either by purchasing it or by earning it.

Clients can purchase accident forgiveness coverage if their household has had no at-fault accidents or driving violations within the last 12 months and has had no more than one at-fault accident within the last three years.

Accident forgiveness coverage can be earned as a reward for safe driving through an earned policy feature. To qualify for earned accident forgiveness coverage, the following criteria must be met:

  • No major violations on your record
  • Be an existing American Family customer for five years and have no at-fault accidents in the last five years
  • Have at least five years of accident-free driving for all drivers on your policy if switching from another auto insurance company to American Family

If you purchase accident forgiveness coverage and remain claim-free for five years, American Family Insurance will remove the purchased coverage from your policy, and add earned accident forgiveness.
